San Francisco: Marina Townhouse

  • A two-unit townhouse in the Marina District of San Francisco. The program called for prioritizing opennes and natural light. The top floor is an open plan accomodating the social spaces. A clerestory allows natural light to flood the center of the space.
  • The bay is angled towards a view of the Palace of Fine Arts.
  • The living room is at the rear and has a terrace overlooking the garden and a spiral stair for access to a small roof deck with long views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

  • The master bedroom is below the terrace, away from the street and with views and access to the garden.
  • The open plan is organized with the kitchen on the street side, the dining room in the center next to a lightwell with views of the Palace of Fine Arts, and the living room / media space at the rear. The stair runs along the side, connecting both floors to the street and the garden. An elevator connects all floors.
  • We called this project {quote}The Pyramid Scheme{quote} because of the qualities of the stair running all along one side, all the way up from the street and all the way down to the garden.
  • The stairwell is also a lightwell allowing reflected light to illuminate the second floor corridor and adjacent spaces.
  • The space is organized with circulation along the east, bathrooms and laundry room center west, and bedrooms at the ends.
  • TOP FLOOR DINING ROOM AND LIVING ROOM
  • The kitchen opens towards the dining room but is separated by the elevator, which is wrapped with a variety of appliances and cabinets.
  • The clerestory allows light to flood the interior of an otherwise confined space.
