The point of departure for this project is the classical Propylaia: the entryway into the Acropolis. A series of stoa-like galleries cut and terrace into Philapopos Hill, immediately to the south of the Acropolis. They are connected by a monumental stairway on axis with the Parthenon. This stairway is flanked by tall columns supporting a grazed space frame canopy.
The different strata of archeological material are displayed in chronological ascending order, with the classical pediments and sculptures at the top. The upper galleries afford a view of the Acropolis along their length. The museum is a Propylaia into the significant periods in the development of the Acropolis.
